The guests of Quinta da Foz can stroll through the estate and explore the beehives, stables, aromatic herb fields, courtyards, and centuries-old gardens.
You can have all this and much more in our Quinta, embellished by peacocks, frogs, plenty of birds, horses, bees, a grand danois named Foz, geese and ducks, crickets, lizards, ladybugs, fireflies, a donkey named “Jurema” and many other animals.
In Foz do Arelho, a village in the western region of Portugal, “Quinta da Foz is more than a house full of stories. The house itself is history!”
Since the sixteenth century, Quinta da Foz hosted kings and princes, it is a place where the rescue of historical figures dating back to the Napoleonic invasions were drawn up. Here were raised sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of the Paiva Magalhães family, descendant of Afonso Henriques’ servants, the captains who crossed the seas to the East and knights who never returned from the battle of Alcácer Quibir.
“Father and son are sitting by the fireplace. They are silent, we can only hear the sound of the burning wood and the rain beating on the glass shutter doors. If they open them, the scent of wet earth spreads over the salon, full of works of art and antiques. This scent is also old. Both men easily remember it from their childhoods. They lived it here, as many other ancestors over the centuries.
They both have the same name, Francisco Paiva Calado. The father is 76, the son 42.
They are silent, but this firewall has witnessed conversations that would fill several volumes. In the cosiness of these flames, we have already spoken of the kings and princes who stayed here; of the rescues planned and carried out here of historical figures from the Napoleonic invasions; of the family’s ancestry and descendants (…)”
